Make Your Clothes Work for You: Tips for Your Body Type

It is a commonly held belief that the fashion industry is ruining the people’s mindset about their body image. Thin is in, as they would say. And more and more people are enticed to go under the knife for a liposuction or breast enhancement surgery.

Medical advancements have made it safer and more accessible to undergo cosmetic surgery. While the fashion industry has championed the long and lean look, it continues to make clothes for an assortment of people. The trick here is to learn which body type you fall under and dress accordingly. The style icon Coco Chanel said “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.” By this, she meant embracing one’s body type and learning to work with what you have. Generally, there are four body types.

While these categories may be broad, you can glean a lot from learning what your type is. Apples have larger busts than hips and can go well by wearing clothes that emphasize their busts and necks. Bananas have hips and waists that are of similar size. Clothing with ruffles and frills can help them achieve a look that simulates curves and femininity. Women with hip sizes larger than their bust are called pears. Tight jeans and high heels help emphasize their curves. Women with hips and bust with an equal size are called hourglasses and represent the classical ideal for femininity.

Whatever your body type, it is important to have your clothes fit you so consider having them customized by a seamstress. And finally, learn to embrace your body. Embrace your uniqueness and the streets will be your catwalk.
